Devara Review
Devara was one of the most anticipated films of the year, especially with a powerhouse like NTR Jr in the lead and Koratala Siva behind the camera. The trailer built up quite a bit of hype, but does the movie live up to the expectations? Well, Devara delivers a solid performance from NTR Jr and some epic background music from Anirudh, but unfortunately, it struggles to break free from the typical commercial film formula.

What’s the Story?
Devara is set in the villages of Yerra Samudram, where Devara (NTR Jr) and his gang, including his friend Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan), make a living by robbing ships. But when Devara realizes the consequences of his actions, he tries to put a stop to their crimes, which naturally creates enemies out of his former allies. The rest of the movie explores how Devara navigates this fallout and the mysterious backstory of a character named Vara.
NTR Jr Steals the Show
Let’s be honest, NTR Jr is the heart of Devara. His intense performance brings life to the character, especially in the action scenes. Whether he’s fighting or reflecting on his past, you can feel the depth he brings to Devara. He’s the main reason the film keeps you hooked. His charisma alone makes some of the more predictable moments bearable.
However, as good as NTR is, Janhvi Kapoor’s role is a bit underwhelming. Given the buzz around her Telugu debut, her character doesn’t have much to do apart from appearing in a few key scenes and a song. Saif Ali Khan as the villain also feels like a missed opportunity. We’ve seen him play much more engaging antagonists in the past, but here, he’s just… there. No big punches or jaw-dropping moments from him, which is a bit of a letdown.
Anirudh’s Music Elevates the Film
Anirudh’s background score is definitely one of the film’s standout elements. The “Fear” song and some of the action scene music really give the film an extra edge. At times, the score does more to elevate the movie than the story itself! And let’s not forget the Ayudha Pooja fight sequence the visuals and music in that scene are truly impressive.

What Works
- NTR Jr’s powerful performance: If you’re a fan of his, you’ll love how he carries the film.
- Anirudh’s music: The BGM really amps up the action.
- The interval action sequence: It’s well-shot and a definite highlight of the film.

What Doesn’t Work
- The predictable narrative: The story takes a formulaic approach, which keeps it from being as gripping as it could have been.
- Underutilized cast: Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan deserved more substantial roles.
- Pacing issues: Some scenes drag, especially in the second half, where the energy dips.
Final Thoughts
Devara isn’t a bad film, but it could have been so much more. NTR Jr gives it his all, and Anirudh’s music gives it that much-needed adrenaline boost, but the story doesn’t take enough risks. If you’re a fan of NTR or looking for a decent action flick, Devara is worth a watch. Just don’t go in expecting something groundbreaking.
