Storyline
Buddy centers on Aditya (Allu Sirish), a respected pilot, and his love story with Priya (Gayatri Bharadwaj), an Air Traffic Controller. Their blossoming relationship takes a dark turn when Priya is attacked by a medical mafia and falls into a coma. In a bizarre twist of fate, Priya’s soul transfers into a teddy bear that Aditya had gifted her. The film follows the journey of Aditya and the teddy bear as they battle the medical mafia to save Priya’s life. While the storyline aims to be a fresh fantasy take, it struggles to find a balance between its emotional core and its over-the-top fantasy elements.
Performances
Allu Sirish, despite showing potential in previous roles, delivers a rather underwhelming performance in Buddy. His portrayal of Aditya lacks the emotional depth required for such a unique plot, making it hard for the audience to connect with him. Gayatri Bharadwaj, though she plays a pivotal role, fades out of the narrative soon after the first act, and her performance doesn’t leave much of an impact. Buddy Movie Review.
Ajmal Ameer as the antagonist does a decent job, though his role is limited by the screenplay. Mukesh Rishi and Ali attempt to inject humor into the film, but their efforts feel forced and fail to add to the overall experience. While the supporting cast tries to contribute, the lack of depth in character writing doesn’t allow them to shine.

Direction and Screenplay
Director Sam Anton tries to craft a story that mixes fantasy and romance, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The idea of a soul inhabiting a teddy bear might have been intriguing on paper, but in practice, it feels forced and disconnected from reality. The screenplay fails to develop the emotional aspects of the story, leaving viewers feeling detached from the characters and their plight. Aditya’s quick acceptance of the teddy bear’s animated state is never explored in depth, resulting in a loss of potential drama.
The film’s pacing is uneven, with the first half setting up the fantasy premise in a dull manner and the second half trying to rescue the story with sporadic bursts of action and comedy, none of which land effectively.

Technical Aspects
On the technical front, Buddy struggles to impress. The music by Hiphop Tamizha, known for delivering energetic scores, falls flat in this film. The songs are forgettable, and the background score doesn’t enhance the emotional or action sequences in any significant way.
Krishnan Vasant’s cinematography is lackluster, with uninspiring visuals that fail to elevate the fantasy elements of the story. For a movie that involves the surreal, the cinematography lacks imagination. The production values are surprisingly low, especially for a film produced by Gnanavel Raja, who is known for delivering high-quality projects. Buddy Movie Review.
Positives;
- Ajmal Ameer’s performance as the antagonist brings some tension to the film.
- The core fantasy concept, though poorly executed, is still unique.
Negatives;
- Weak writing and poor execution of the fantasy elements.
- Lack of emotional connection between characters.
- Underwhelming performances, especially from Allu Sirish and Gayatri Bharadwaj.
- Forced humor that does not land effectively.
- Disappointing music and cinematography, which don’t match the film’s ambitious premise.
Verdict
Buddy had the potential to be an engaging fantasy drama, but it falters due to poor execution, lackluster performances, and a weak screenplay. The film’s core concept, while unique, is handled in a way that stretches believability without providing enough emotional depth to make it work. Despite its attempts at humor and romance, Buddy ends up being an unsatisfying watch.
