Severe Weather Conditions and IMD’s Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has highlighted a deep depression over Saurashtra and Kachchh, which is expected to intensify further as it advances towards the northeast Arabian Sea. Ongoing Rescue Operations
In response to the worsening conditions, the Gujarat state government has ramped up rescue and relief efforts. Six Army contingents have been deployed alongside 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 22 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. These teams have been working tirelessly to evacuate citizens from the most affected areas. According to NDRF inspector Manjit, 95 people have been rescued in the past two days from flood-hit regions like Dwarka.
State relief commissioner Alok Pandey reported that around 40,000 people have been evacuated so far, with over 5,000 individuals rehabilitated by the state’s health department, led by Health Minister Rushikesh Patel.
Prime Minister Modi’s Assurance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally intervened, assuring Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel of all possible support from the Central Government. The Prime Minister emphasized the protection of lives and livestock, guiding the state on prioritizing rescue and relief operations. The Gujarat government is currently focused on delivering essential supplies such as food packets, drinking water, and healthcare to those stranded by the floods, especially in the hardest-hit areas like Vadodara, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar.
IMD’s Latest Advisory
The IMD has warned that the deep depression over Saurashtra and Kachchh is likely to move west-southwest and enter the northeast Arabian Sea by the morning of August 30. Although the system may temporarily intensify over the sea, it is expected to move away from the Indian coast.
As Gujarat continues to face the wrath of nature, the combined efforts of state and central agencies are crucial in mitigating the impact of these floods. The situation remains fluid, with more rain expected in the coming days. Citizens are urged to stay informed and heed warnings as the state navigates this challenging period.
